Introduction | ||
Most of the music I've written is in collaboration with my most excellent friend Freddie, who I came to know very well during my time at Cambridge University. Our first joint effort was during my second year in 1992, when, after getting my spanking new Yamaha SY77 synthesizer, I decided to write a musical as part of the Chinese Society Variety Show. Freddie, who has already left Cambridge, nevertheless still came up every weekend, officially to visit his then-girlfriend, but actually to work with me on the music... :) After having had so much fun working together on the musical, 8 years later we decided to join forces again... |
Pop Compositions | ||||||
In 1999, even though Freddie was in New York and I in Hong Kong, thanks to the Internet, we were able to work together on trying to write pop songs for the Asian (Chinese) markets. We made sure we were using the same software and sound modules, so that the files we exchange would sound identical on both ends. Thanks to ICQ realtime chat, we were able to communicate and work on the songs in a very efficient way. After the music was done, I would then do the sound recording (vocals, backings, and mixing) in my home studio. Anyway, I submitted our songs to virtually all the music studios in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and after a few months of rejections and no replies, we had our first success in 2000 which was way beyond our expectations - our song was sung by Aaron Kwok (one of the major Hong Kong pop stars) and released as the first single on his mandarin album Journey Cheer. They even made a dance game out of it! Shortly after, another one of our songs was chosen by Rain, an up-and-coming teen Hong Kong cutie.
For a FULL ACCOUNT, check out: Special thanks also to Alan Sun, also a part-time composer, without whom I probably would not have been motivated enough to start writing again! Check out his SUPERB website!!! One other recent piece of composition I did was when I decided to propose to my Honey Dearest Elaine. It was the first and only song I have ever written for anyone, and formed part of my marriage proposal to her, along with a poem, and which were both put on a website but which I'm not telling you about (don't want you to puke... :)). Anyway, here's the song, called "Journey For Two" (mp3 - 2.88 Mb). Tell me if you need a bucket... :) Some of you have written to me wanting to use the song for your own proposal. If you want a "vocal-less" instrumental track to sing to, then write to me.

"Speak of The Devil" - The Musical | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
And this was what originally started it all - the musical I wrote with Freddie during my second year in Cambridge for the Cambridge University Chinese Society (CUCS)'s Variety Show in the Spring of 1992. This is (sort of) the sequel to the musical in the previous year's V-Show (1991) by Ken Lam (called "Savage Turtle" - or "Chan Yunn Guai" (download here - 17.4 Mb)), where the wicked witches turned the Princess' cat into a mutant turtle which almost killed her, until the Prince (played by me) came along and killed the turtle and saved the Princess with a big wet kiss. In this "sequel", the Prince and the Princess are about to be wedded into marital bliss, until it is interrupted by the Devil (played by me - yep, I switched roles cos the bad guys are far more interesting to play! :)). Since I didn't want to sing in Chinese (Cantonese), I wrote it such that the baddies sung in English and the goodies in Chinese, haha... Recommended listening: Desperate For Girls, Say You'll Be Mine, and if you don't mind listening to Chinese songs, Princess' Love Song. Cast and Credits:
